Landmark Status

In 1979 Prospect-Lefferts Gardens was designated a historic district by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, identifying it as a special neighborhood in New York City. The status serves to safeguard the architecture and historic heritage of the area, of which Lefferts Manor is a large part, recognizing its distinct "sense of place." In our neighborhood the historic district distinction serves to protect the unique single-family covenant and also helps to enhance property values.

The historic district status applies to the exterior of the buildings in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, so any proposed alterations to the outside of homes must receive approval from the Commission before work begins. This can be a time-consuming process, but it ensures that the improvements are historically accurate and executed by skilled contractors. Living in a historic district comes with a responsibility to maintain the buildings as faithfully as possible, and most Manor residents happily accept the challenge.
