Rutland 1 Awarded Honorable Mention in the
2010 Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest

Rutland Road Greenest Block In Brooklyn 2010Rutland Road between Flatbush Ave. and Bedford Ave. was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s "2010 Greenest Block in Brooklyn" Contest.
According to BBG President, Scott Medbury, 220 blocks from 20 neighborhoods participated in the contest. "It’s a reminder of the incredible growth of this borough. Brooklyn is famous for its ‘can do’ attitude and its one-of-a-kind style." From mid-June through July a panel of more than 30 judges visited the blocks. Each block is is judged by a number of criteria such as color, plant variety, plant suitablility, street trees, and street tree-bed care.

Last year Lincoln Road between Bedford Ave. and Rogers Ave. took first place. It’s good to know that Lefferts Manor still has game. Congradulations to Rutland 1 and all of the home owners, who worked hard throughout this hot and dry summer, for this win!

Rutland Road Readers featured on
The New York Times City Room Blog

Rutland Road Block Party Potluck SupperThe New York Times visits PLG again today, with an article about the Rutland Road Readers on their City Room Blog. In the post, several of the group’s sixteen members, all of whom live on Rutland 2, discuss how they joined the group, how it works, and the sense of community they have found with it.
Emma Straub says,

I grew up on the Upper West Side and didn’t know more than a handful of people. After a month on the block, I know everybody.

Pam Glaser tells how she was asked to join before she had even moved in during a going-away party for the departing owners.

When I had just gotten into the party I was already being told: ‘We’re reading “Anna Karenina“; you better get started. It’s a long book.‘

The idea for the book club came up during the annual Rutland 2 block party in 2005, while sharing their block-long potluck supper. The group had their first meeting (On Beauty by Zadie Smith) a couple of months later, and has been meeting almost monthly ever since.

The New York Times Profiles PLG

The New York Times Prospect Lefferts Gardens Profile

Benjamin Norman for The New York Times

In this Sunday’s edition of the New York Times Real Estate section there is a profile of Prospect Lefferts Gardens. The last time the New York Times profiled PLG was in 2004.

The article quotes several of our neighbors discussing why they chose to live in PLG. It discusses the friendliness and strong sense of community we enjoy here. There is also information on PLG history, schools, commuting times, and it’s proximity to Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

This is a very flattering portrait of our corner of the world, despite the annoying “Rutland Street” error.
