Save the Date: 49th Annual PLG House & Garden Tour on Sunday June 2, 2019

The 49th Annual Prospect Lefferts Gardens House & Garden Tour
Sunday, June 2, 2019 starting at 12:00PM.

xFor complete information about this year’s Tour, see our PLG House & Garden Tour 2019 Special Edition of the Lefferts Manor Echo!

On show this year is Lefferts Manor itself, in honor of the tour sponsor’s 100 th anniversary. Tour goers will learn about the 10 block neighborhood which extends from Lincoln Road to Fenimore Street and
from Flatbush to Rogers Avenues. They are encouraged to look up from their tour maps and take in the
beauty, note the similarities, the differences and all of the unique details that abound. There were at least 20 architects active in the design of Lefferts Manor in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s but, to quote the Landmarks designation report for the PLG Historic District, “it is the work of Brooklyn architects Benjamin Driesler, Axel Hedman, and the firm of Slee & Bryson that gives the area its cohesiveness feel.”

A sample of what you’ll see on this year’s Tour
Photography by Martin Friedman

Here is a taste of what you’ll see on tour…

  • A large freestanding frame house designed in 1910 by Slee & Bryson that features rich wood paneling and stained glass windows and a gorgeous fireplace in the dining room.
  • A 1907 three-story brownstone by architect Axel Hedman includes a grand piano on the parlor floor surrounded by refurbished wood work to die for.
  • A limestone rowhouse that is one of many in a row designed in 1909 by Axel Hedman. Inside, don’t miss the beautiful fireplace mantles and look for the cool antique fire extinguisher.
  • A 1928 neo-Classical brick house design by A.J. Daidone is decked out with surprises. Round-top windows, exquisite wood and plaster details and original light fixtures wow the eyes in this unique, respectfully renovated house.
  • A Benjamin Driesler designed brownstone from 1909 that features an entrance with beautiful double, wooden & glass doors with decorative iron grilles. The entry table was acquired in Panama in the 1900’s.
  • A very cool side/backyard decked out with modern patio furnishings and plantings in which to relax to live jazz entertainment while enjoying complimentary drinks and goodies donated by local businesses and residents.
  • A 1910, neo-Renaissance styled limestone built in 1910 has gorgeous oak woodwork, Arts & Crafts furniture and eclectic personal collections as well as a cool slate floored hang out space in the basement.
  • A unique neo-Tudor style rowhouse that is one of eighteen designed by architect/builder Peter J. Collins in 1914-15 sports a meticulously presented and well groomed front garden.
  • Colonial Revival frame house designed by Axel Hedman in 1906 that has been carefully renovated to create a bright, spacious modern home that still keeps its period detail.
  • AND take in the Voices of Lefferts exhibit at Drink, 492 Flatbush Ave.
to learn more about the people and faces that make of this great neighborhood.

Immediately to the north is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, which will be in bloom, and farther north are the Brooklyn Museum and the central branch of the Brooklyn Public Library.

We Need Your Help
It takes the coordinated efforts of many volunteers to help make this event a success. We hope you can help by being a tour guide* and/or contributing food for the refreshment area.

If you live in Prospect Lefferts Gardens and are interested in volunteering to be a tour guide, contribute refreshments, or otherwise help with the House Tour, please contact the House Tour team at plghousetour@gmail.com.

*Tour guides are assigned to a house, usually one per floor, and help supervise and guide the visitors. They work one of 2 shifts, either 12:00-2:30 or 2:30-5:00.
In exchange for 2 ½ hours of their time, tour guides receive free tour tickets. Although the tour closes to the general public at 5PM, there will be an extra hour from 5PM to 6PM for guides to see the houses.
