PLG News Round Up

Kings Country Nurseries - Prospects Lefferts GardensThe New York Times recently ran a nice article on our local PLG nursery, Kings County Nurseries. It discusses how the business has adapted to serve its many customers in our diverse neighborhood. Kings County Nurseries is located on New York Avenue between Rutland Road and Fenimore Street. They work closely with many local block associations to help them realize beautification projects. They are a good neighbor to all of Prospect Lefferts Gardens, and we are lucky to have them nearby.

Our fantastic neighborhood blog Hawthorne Street posted a reminder that kids under 12 can ride the Prospect Park Carousel free every Thursday this August. Astoria Federal Savings is sponsoring this event.

The Brownstoner blog’s Forum recently had a very informative discussion on the Lefferts Manor single-family covenant.

Last Tuesday, a Maple Street home in Lefferts Manor was featured as a Brownstoner "Building of the Day".

Free Shakespeare in the Park – Prospect Park!

Brooklyn’s Brave New World Repertory Theatre will kick off its inaugural season of the Brave New World Shakespeare Festival in Prospect Park with four staged readings of As You Like It FREE to the public on Thursdays beginning on July 22, 29, August 5 and 12 at 5pm. Free events for children including a storybook hour of As You Like It for kids 3-6 and workshops for children 7-12 will begin at 4pm before the performances. As You Like It will take place at The Oriental Pavilion in the southeast corner of the park. Enter at the Lincoln Road or Parkside entrances. Prospect Lefferts Gardens residents once again have easy access to the best of Brooklyn’s cultural offerings.

The readings will be performed in the round, as Shakespeare’s plays were originally presented. There will be seating for 99, with additional standing room also available.

Brave New World Shakespeare Festival 2010

Known for its bold and critically acclaimed productions, Brave New World already has plans to expand their Shakespeare Festival and mount a full production of a yet un-determined play in Prospect Park in summer 2011, according to Claire Beckman, BNW’s Producing Artistic Director. Commenting on this inaugural season, Ms. Beckman says, "The pastoral setting of As You Like It lends itself perfectly to performing outdoors, and the indoor court scenes will also work beautifully in the majestic Oriental Pavilion which is an open air venue that can shelter a large cast and audience from a light summer rain.” She notes that “the play features one of Shakespeare’s most famous speeches, ‘All the world’s a stage,’ which is certainly Brave New World’s philosophy, and why we enjoy bringing theater to every corner of the Borough of Brooklyn."

DAYDREAM was conceived in 2006 by Laura Frenzer, PLG Arts President and Rohana Elias-Reyes, a PLG Arts founding member, both Prospect Lefferts Gardens parents and theater professionals.  In an effort to make better use of the Imagination Playground stage, they decided to put on a show, and settled on a short family-friendly version of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”  Over the years twenty-one actors have performed in the show, all but six of whom have resided in PLG or nearby neighborhoods, and seven PLG residents have lent their talents as designers, builders, and seamstresses.

Renowned Local Artist at PLG Arts Production

Otto NealOtto Neil and Laura FrenzerPLG Arts’ production of “Daydream”, a children’s version of Midsummer Night’s Dream had it’s third season in Prospect Park’s Imagination Playground this past summer. Otto Neals, a prominent Brooklyn sculptor and painter, and a frequent exhibitor at Dorsey’s Gallery, on Rogers Avenue in our neighborhood was on hand for the children’s activities following the Sunday July 13th performance. Neals created the large bronze statue of “Peter and Willie”, characters in Ezra Jack Keats’ book “Peter’s Chair” which is an important feature of this innovative playground.
